Tightening up of User Registrations

Postby curt » Tue Feb 07, 2006 10:02 pm

We are happy that several town officials have joined SpeakoutDanville, either in the blogs or in the chat, or both.

But we want to make sure that the people are who they say they are, that if an article is posted by Bob Selectman it really is Bob Selectman and not somebody posing as Bob Selectman.

So far, we have verified the identity of people posting as town officials, using known email addresses or phone numbers, but it has been after something has already been posted over their names.

From now on, you will be able to register, but one of the site administrators (AKA the troika) will need to activate it before you will be able to post articles or replies. We will contact you by email and ask for some information so that we can verify that you are who you say you are. Then we will activate your account. We are hoping for a quick turnaround on each request.

We are not out to force people to expose their true identities to the public. If you want to use some semi-anonymous nick, as many of you have, you will still be allowed to. We think people are more credible when they post over their own names, but we allow for circumstances where people have good reason not to.

If you do use your real name in posting, we want our members and visitors to be confident that it really is you.

This change will have no effect on people who have already registered.

If you would like to comment on this, feel free to open a topic in "Comments and Suggestions" in the SpeakoutDanville.org category, or reply to one if somebody has beaten you to it.
