Cell Phones

Postby SBinRockrimmon » Thu Apr 05, 2012 11:26 am

Just curious what people have for providers/phones. I have Verizon and am using an android. The coverage in this area is awful. My contract is up in a couple months and I'm debating on switching. I've seen people on their phones in Hannaford and I can't even get a weak signal in there.

I have T-Mobile, and it's a black hole is most of town. I have some reception since I live on top of a hill, but a lot of NH has pretty bad reception when I drive around, especially if I leave the major highways.

We have verizon as well, purchased the extender for 199.00 installed it and we now have a good connection at home. I get service at the Market Basket in Epping, but not at Hannaford.

We have Verizon as well.
Lousy reception at home.
As a matter of fact, a neighbor has had such bad reception at home over the years (and made Verizon aware of it every time they lost a call), Verizon gave them the extender for their house at no charge.

I have a Droid Bionic..the phone is fine, it's the reception that's not.
Yes, the phone is 4G compatible, but there is no 4G service in this area (although the Salesman kept telling me that we would have 4G service in this area within a year...yeah, I'm waiting for that to happen).

And, did you know that if you EVER drop a call with Verizon, if you hit ## Send, it will notify Verizon of where the call was lost?
This is supposed to help them track their "dead spots".

All,
I had a lengthy discussion with a senior person at Verizon recently on this topic. They informed me that if you loose a call that you should immediately type '#' + "#' <SEND>. That is 2 '#" followed by the send command. What this does is put a flag in their system that the previous call was a dropped call and marks your location. It will determine you location via triangulation and GPS (yes they know where you are). They monitor this to determine where additional coverage is needed. I think we all know that Brown Hill Road has a dead spot. This person found that Danville users connect to towers that are on Route 125.

So my big questions to all of you is would you support having a cell tower in Town? Would you also support the leasing of Town land (such as the Community Center) to accomplish this? Figures can range $1500-$2500/month.

Thanks,
Shawn

I would suppose it depends on where, but for the most part I would say yes, and yes. I'm all for the town getting a few bucks AND better cell coverage for residents.

I have a signal booster at my house too, and it has resolved the dropped calls at home, but the signal still isn't great unless I stand right next to the amplified signal.

I'm a bit curious as to what service seems to work well enough to get a signal inside Hannaford. I get nothing inside there or inside Walgreens. Once outside either building I do get a weak signal (good enough to use).

I have AT&T and often makes calls form Hannaford and in Town without a problem. Some places like Brown Hill, Town Hall and the Community Center I lose the signal, but for the most part I am good. It could also have to do with your phone as I have noticed that Blackberry seems to get good signals compared to other phones.

I would support a cell tower in Danville.

You could put a cell phone tower in the town hall or the Baptist church and nobody would know.

There is one in the New Castle Congregational Church:

My brother, a lawyer, often works for cell companies siting towers in NH. He's the guy in the suit that the locals hate when he tells them they have to be reasonable.

My service is Verizon and it is mostly OK at my house, which is low and gets bad over the air TV reception, and anywhere in Danville.

Previously I had Nextel. I could get calls at my house, but the caller could not hear me unless I stepped outside.

As for Hannaford I think the issue is all the metal in the frame. I have been in Hannaford in Hampton and other towns, and other supermarkets and big box stores where the service is poor or nonexistent indoors but fine when you step outside.

There is a cell tower near East Coast Lumber. Since my signal doesn't get any better I can only assume that it's an AT&T tower. It would explain people on that provider getting good coverage in Hannaford.

Verizon, no problems with coverage, except for brown hill road.

Have not had a need to use my phone in Hannafords or walgreens but have used it on 111 in those locations.

As for coverage, I know I have no pager coverage in Walmart in Epping.

In January, I was told 4g would be in the area this summer, that they are a bit ahead of schedule. It believe it is in Manchester and the Seacoast already.

I have had Nextel (before Sprint bought them), Verizon, TMobile, and finally AT&T. I had coverage problems on the 111 and 125 corridors and up the Maine coast with all of the first 3. With AT&T I can actually originate and receive calls from inside supermarkets. I have 3.5G data coverage everywhere...dunno if 4G is here or coming soon but I'm in no hurry to retire the family fleet of Nokia S60 phones.

A tower would be a good idea.

Why was the tower in Danville at the self storage site never equiped with the antenna?
