Danville students hope to spread peace through artwork
By Christine Dube

DANVILLE — The fourth-graders at Danville Elementary School have been working on an art project they hope will encourage peace throughout the world.

The children are participating in the Global Art Project, a movement that began in 1994 with a mission to spread world peace by promoting tolerance and nonviolence through art. The project expresses the idea that we are all one.

Art teacher Becca Garone was introduced to the project by Sarah Weston, mother of fourth-grader Molly Weston, who is new to Danville this year.

Sarah Weston has participated in the Global Art Project for several years herself. This year, her artwork will be exchanged with a participant in Australia. She has friends who have traded artwork through the project with people in Belarus, Nepal and Kenya. She has encouraged all of Molly's teachers to participate as well.

"I think this is such a great social and artistic learning opportunity for the children," Weston said.
